EV-D68 infections are more common closer to the end of summer. In recent years a different non-polio enterovirus called EV-D68 has been in the headlines for its association to acute flaccid myelitis, a condition that seems to mimic elements of polio.

Most of us aren't old enough to remember the times of polio epidemics, but polio is a type of enterovirus, and it most commonly spread in late summer through swimming pools before chlorination became common. But they also spread from exposure to stool, which makes public pools a potential source of spread.
